To accommodate the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia™, the city is building the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium. Located at the Strelka, or the confluence of the Oka and the Volga, the stadium construction began in August 2014 and is well underway, proceeding to schedule. Construction and finishing works will be completed in December 2017 at the latest. The adjacent premises will be repurposed as a recreational area with a park and riverside walks. Fenced off for years, Strelka will finally open to the residents to become a new family leisure area. The project for construction of the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium has been certified under the international BREEAM standard.
The project provides construction and overhaul of roads on the adjacent premises, including pedestrian crossings and tunnels.
The Nizhny Novgorod Stadium is designed as a multi-functional arena comprising sports training facilities, medical and fitness centres, shopping areas, open for year-round use. The Nizhny Novgorod Stadium will seat 45,000 spectators.
Its location is within walking distance of the city railroad terminal, and the arena is set to become a tourist attraction.
The Nizhny Novgorod Stadium project was highly praised by the expert community and chosen the Best Football Stadium Project for the 2018 FIFA World Cup™ at the Sports Facilities 2015 award ceremony.
