The Annunciation Monastery
The monastery was founded in 1221 by Prince George Vsevolodovich at about the time of the Nizhny Novgorod foundation. Judging by the monastery name (in Russian – Blagoveshchensky, that is, bringing the good news / the Annunciation), it can be assumed that important missionary function was assigned to the monastery, that is to spread the "good news" and the Orthodox faith.
In 1229, during the attack by a Mordovian prince Purgas, the monastery was burnt to the ground. According to a legend, Metropolitan Alexy of Moscow when heading to the Golden Horde, failed to find a shelter in any of the local houses and thus he had to spend the night at the monastery ruins. Sitting by the water spring under the hill and looking at the monastery ruins, he vowed that in case of his successful return, he would restore the monastery. Eventually Alexis was released from the Golden Horde "with great honor", as he was able to heal the blind wife of the khan named Taidula, thus saving the lands of Rus from more of ruinous raids. And the man made good on his vow. Later on, despite repeated fire, the monastery flourished, in particular, the monks collected a unique library of manuscripts and early printed books.
In 1919 the monastery was closed down. It hosted a school as well as some communal residence, warehouses and repair shops. In 1922, at the time of famine, the most valuable utensils were seized from the Annunciation Monastery for the hungry people benefit. In 1947 some of the monastery premises were transformed into a local Planetarium. In 1991 the former property of the Annunciation Monastery was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church.
