Verhnevolzhskay embankment

Description History

One of the favorite attractions in Nizhny Novgorod, this is an ideal itinerary for walking and cycling, for sports and photography. On the one hand it offers captivating river landscapes, on the other it demonstrated fancy merchant houses, such as the mansion of the ex-mayor Dmitry Sirotkin, a "palazzo-style" building of the merchant family Rukavishnikov and the mansion of the steamboat company owners Kamensky.

“Nizhny Novgorod ... there is a place:   a proper boulevard on the high river bank, and below there is that river ... all around you see the vast Russian lands, a landscape of incomparable beauty ... So I see this picture, and I can  smell  the river . Neither Paris nor London could ever compare to that place for me”, said a Russian well-known opera singer Fyodor Shalyapin when describing Verkhne-Volzhskaya embankment area.

In 1834 Emperor Nicholas I, when visiting Nizhny Novgorod, came to see the embankment and was discontented with the site. The emperor simply could not admire the river views due to the noisome smell as the local people used to drain here all the household wastes. The houses themselves were also not such a pleasant view, all of them untidy wooden huts facing the city, with vegetable gardens at the river side. According to the local tale the Emperor noted that in Nizhny Novgorod nature does everything to adorn the city while its residents do their best to spoil the beauty. He ordered for this area beautification, for the old houses to be demolished, and for the new houses to be built in stone, with their facade to the river, to properly clean up the slope and to set up a public garden. By 1836 the royal instructions were performed, the embankment was paved and the construction of new stone houses started according to the projects of the best available architects. Alexandrovsky Garden was laid out.
