The Church of Our Lady of the Sign and the Holy Myrrh-Bearersis one of the oldest in Nizhny Novgorod. The church was initially built in the early 16th century, and then rebuilt in stone in the mid 17th century. This is probably the first boat-shaped church in the history of Russian stone architecture; all its premises are located on the same line just like the boat units. Venerable wonderworkers St.Euphimious of Suzdal and St. Makarius of the Yellow Waters were both baptized in this very Church of the Holy Myrrh-Bearers. In remembrance of the two missionaries, there is a sculpture of the two monks near the Church.

The existing two-storey church in stone was built in 1649 on the site of the abandoned wooden church.
Ivan the Terrible, as they say, used to store part of his treasury here. Some enthusiasts still have not entirely given up hope of finding the missing library of Tsar Ivan. However, it makes little sense, in the Soviet years the church building hosted a technical school for light industry workers and the internal premises underwent considerable alteration, so it is unlikely that there is at least one unexplored corner in this church.
The church building was returned to Nizhny Novgorod diocese in the 1990s` in 2004 the new domes were mounted instead of the ones destroyed in the Soviet years.
There is a tramway ring located close by this church and a section of the tram line bed in the church neighborhood is insulated with a special anti-vibration agent.
