Pushkov's Chambers is one of three residential buildings dated of the 17th century and preserved in Nizhny Novgorod. In fact, it`s an ensemble of two buildings: one of them one-story building (dated of 1697-1700), and another one two-story building (dated of 1701-1710). Beneath the living quarters there are deep cellars, one of which equipped with a ramp for the smooth delivery of the goods (the city mayor Pushnikov was engaged in leather trade). It`s a rare heritage piece of civil architecture of federal value.

According to the legend (not confirmed by any existing documents), in this building of Pushnakov`s Chambers, tsar Peter the Great celebrated his fiftieth birthday in 1722.
The house owner Yakov Pushnikov was a proactive and smart businessman, yet not so much scrupulous. So in 1734 he announced his intention to establish in Nizhny Novgorod a cloth manufacturing facility and a silk ribbon factory. The competent authorities` board approved the project, and Pushnikov received a ten-year exemption from all local taxes. All that was required was to send samples of the finished products to the capital. However, two years later he never got down to that business. A special commission upon arrival to Nizhny Novgorod found the site of the proposed manufactory with a single barn, a drunken tradesman and several apprentice boys. The non-existent factory owner was summoned to the capital, but on the way he died so he never took the stand.
