One of the oldest museums in Russia, the largest museum of fine art in the Nizhny Novgorod region. The museum was opened on June 25 (July 7) in 1896, becoming one of the first public museums in the Russian province.
The museum has two branches: the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin (permanent exhibition of Russian art of the 14th-20th centuries) and the Verkhne-Volzhskaya Embankment (permanent exposition of West European art of the 15th-20th centuries).
