In the main square of the city there is a monument to one of the most famous natives of Nizhny Novgorod land, Kuzma Minin, who was a local community leader. The national hero is embodied as solemnly stretching his hand far away. This Minin`s statue is clad in rich boyar clothes, so it may be assumed that the sculptor Oleg Komov captured the man not at the time of the convocation of Nizhny Novgorod militia, but after the liberation of Moscow from the Polish occupants. It was then that Kuzma Minin, common trader in meat and cattle from Nizhny Novgorod, was awarded the boyar title for his services to the Fatherland.

Monument to Kuzma Minin
The idea to erect a monument to Minin (or to both Minin and Pozharsky) in Nizhny Novgorod was discussed for many years. Finally, in 1912 they held a design competition for the monument, and the sculptor Simonov's project won. During the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty (1913), in the presence of Emperor Nicholas II, the first stone of this monument was laid. However, they only managed to erect the pedestal and then the First World War burst out. After the revolution, the granite pedestal was dismantled and allowed to other needs, and Minin as a historical figure became unpopular, from the defender of the Fatherland he instantly became "an accomplice of the Romanovs" and persona non grata.
However, during the Great Patriotic War, the attitude towards Minin was reconsidered again. In Gorky city (the Soviet-time name of Nizhny Novgorod), the city announced another call for proposals for the monument to the hero of the national militia. Sculptor Alexander Kolobov, in his own studio right away started working in the material while others were only making sketches, and a few months later the author presented an accomplished project. Of course, there was no bronze available for the monument as the metal was designated to the battlefield, so the statue was in concrete, only painted with bronze paint. In November 7, 1943 the monument was inaugurated.
In the summer of 1985 the monument that needed repair or replacement was dismantled and sent to Balakhna, the homeland of the national hero. Then in June 1, 1989 a new monument was installed in Gorky/Nizhny Novgorod, and the old one after the restoration was fixe up in the town of Balakhna.
