History
Sotsgorod area in Avtozavodsky district is a unique in its way micro-district, built in the 1930s` for the workers of Gorky Automobile Plant (GAZ). It was supposed to be a project of the near future, a garden city with a lot of space, green zones, communal housing, without any private kitchen as the inhabitants of such socialist paradise should not waste their time on household chores and could go have food in public canteens.
The car building plant in this area was built in record time, and in order to provide this giant enterprise with a labor force, whole villages were moved to the residential district Sotsgorod. At first, many of them had to live in cheap frame-and-panel houses, later on replaced by permanent residential housing.
Initially, it was all about standard low-cost housing, and in 1936 the first samples of the Stalin Empire design appeared in Sotsgorod area: Busyginsky House, Avtozavodsky Department Store, Mir Cinema, Palace of Culture and Radius House.
"This area is unique in its way, there are similar buildings in Russia, but not a whole town in town, neither in Moscow, nor in Yekaterinburg: they had similar socialist projects yet not so well preserved as a whole complex, that is including the layout development and structure”, commented Tatyana Shmakova, Director of the Urban Development and Architecture in Nizhny Novgorod.
