What to visit
Church of All Saints
Today, the Church of All Saints is located on the territory of Kulibin Park, the former Peter and Paul Cemetery. This necropolis was set up in the 18th century, at that time outside the city. But Nizhny Novgorod is a fast-growing city, soon the cemetery was in the outskirts and then in downtown. Therefore, in 1930s` century it was decided to dismantle the tombstones and plant the trees on top of the burials and make it a park. From the old cemetery there are only two graves and this Church of All-Saints (1781), also called the Church of Peter and Paul (after another church demolished during the redevelopment of the city), one of the few surviving churches of Russian baroque.
Throughout its history, the church also underwent several rearrangements. In 1939 the Church of All Saints was closed, and its old bell tower was destroyed. The premises were used for the youth cinema. In the 1990s` the church was returned to the diocese, and in 2014 the belfry was restored.
In the immediate vicinity of the church are two surviving burials, one of the famous self-taught mechanic Ivan Kulibin and another one of the grandmother of Maxim Gorky (Akulina Ivanovna Kashirina).
