The Transfiguration of Christ Church

Description History

A small white stone church built in the "half-mountain" (that is, between the root and the top) on the high right bank of the Volga, on the olden site that marks the location of the ancient Pechersky Monastery destroyed by a landslide in the late 16th century.

The temple is located on the territory once occupied by Pechersky Monastery. At the end of the 16th century, it was destroyed by a devastating landslide, with all the buildings. The monastery was later on rebuilt after the Time of Troubles, in a new place closer to the city walls.

The landslide that destroyed the monastery also revealed the tomb hidden in the depths of the hill with the relics of schemonk Joasaph (a monk who accepted the great schema and gave vows of ascetic life).

As per the orders of Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich, a wooden Transfiguration Church was built over the tomb of Joasaph. At the end of the 18th century this church was destructed by fire and then it was restored in stone, and in 1882 near the tomb cave they built a temple was in honor of the Monk Joasaph, prince of India.

In 1929, the representatives of the local authorities made an attempt to withdraw the relics and opened the tomb. This provoked mass protest and riot among the inhabitants of Pechersky Sloboda. In response the authorities arrested the entire clergy of the Pechersky church and accused them of anti-Soviet activities, many of them were deported to the North. After more repressions against the clergymen in 1930s, the church was closed and the divine services resumed in August 1943.
