The Church St.Sergius of Radonezh

Description History

Sergievskaya Street received its name from the church of St. Sergius of Radonezh (25a, Sergievskaya Street). The church in this place was founded, presumably, in the 14th century, and since then had been repeatedly reconstructed. The temple, as we see it today, was erected in the late 19th century and it was preserved mainly due to the fact that in the Soviet years the building was housing the Union of Nizhny Novgorod artists. We have no reliable information on the actual performer of the church the magnificent interior painting. It must have been if not the famous artist Mikhail Nesterov himself, then probably someone from his close circle, after all, there are fair copies of his paintings, in particular his famous "The Vision to the Youth Bartholomew".

The Church St. Sergius of Radonezhwas built in stone the 17th century by Nizhny Novgorod merchant Athanasius Olisov, presumably on the site of an older wooden church.

The building was subjected to numerous reconstructions and in 1865 another project for this church was personally approved by the Emperor. The works were supervised by architect Kilevein.

The new church façade work had much in common with the traditional forms of the ancient Russian churches.

Khramtsovsky, Nizhny Novgorod historian of the XIXth century noted: "The looks of St.Sergius Church resemble Byzantine architecture with two domes: one above the main volume and the other above St.Nicolas side-chapel, both of them topped with golden crosses ".

In the Soviet years the building was housing the Union of Nizhny Novgorod artists. The union member artists took care of the interior, in particular, they were able to preserve the precious frescoes.

The temple was returned to Nizhny Novgorod diocese in 2003. In the year 2006 a total number of 12 bells were installed on the bell tower.
