Chamber of merchant Athanasius Olisov

Description History

Next to the Dormition of the Holy Virgin Church you may see a former residence of the man on whose money the church was built. The house of a local merchant Athanasius Firsovich Olisov dated of the second half of the 17th century is indeed the kind of the  "white stone chambers"  like they say in a Russian fairy-tale,  with an intricate design high  porch, patterned stone architraves and ceramic tiles. All this beauty was rescued (and partly created anew) by the restoration team in 1976. Today, the building of Olisov's Chambers is assigned to Nizhny Novgorod Diocese, and it currently hosts a community club for people with hearing impairment.

The builder of the stone chambers is known as Athanasius Firsovich Olisov, a reputable man in Nizhny Novgorod.

He was originally from a family of wealthy soap-makers and continued the trade of his ancestors by expanding his own business as he bought oversees goods at the trade fairs in Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod in order to resell. In 1666 the man headed Nizhny Novgorod customs and thus acquired the necessary connections. In 1672, Olisov was sent to Astrakhan to manage the royal salt and fish facilities in Astrakhan-Yaitsk.  Upon his return to Nizhny Novgorod, he was elected to head the district council. At that time the townspeople were on the brink of desolation because of the growing taxes, and Olisov was sent to see the tsar with a petition. Olisov gained an audience and was granted the royal permission for Nizhny Novgorod residents not to pay the old debts.

After the tsar granted him a so-called letter of privilege Athanasius Olisov had the right to deal in oversees trade.

By 1678 in this hill neighborhood (the place is called Ilyinsky after Prophet Elijah); he already had five different estates but only one of them survived to this day. The Chambers of Olisov and the small church nearby make up a single ensemble.

Olisov remained an active merchant until the end of the 17th century. However, the turn of the century brought him only grief. Both his sons died during the plague, the fire of 1701 devastated his shops and most of the property. The might of Olisov`s trading house fell apart and in 1704, Athanasius Olisov died, and the remains of his property were handed down to his grandson Mikhail.
