Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street
The area of today`s street Bolshaya Pokrovskaya was inhabited since a long time, according to archaeological research as early as the 13th and 14th centuries. At the end of the 18th century, as per the decrees of Catherine II, the city underwent a major re-development and at that time Bolshaya Pokrovskaya appeared on the city map. The street name originates from the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin, earlier located in this district.
Bolshaya Pokrovskaya was a real nest of the local nobility, here lived the highest ranking noble families of Nizhny Novgorod. Closer to the beginning of the 20th century the street look was getting similar to what we see today. It was noisy, crowded, a place for holidays, shopping and promenade for idle strollers.
In the Soviet time Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street was re-named after Yakov Sverdlov (and the city oldest residents still sometimes call it Sverdlovka, out of habit). The house of Sverdlov`s family in Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, where this prominent revolutionary leader was born, has survived to this day. There used o be a trolley line in ex-Sverdlov street, but from 1980s this area is fully pedestrian.
