Opposite the River Station we may see one of the most remarkable buildings of Nizhny Novgorod, so called Blinov`s Arcade (Blinovsky Passage in Rozhdestvenskaya str., 24). It was built on the money of the richest merchants and industrialists, the salt and grain magnates the Blinov brothers, as a commercial rental house. The premises were rented out for restaurants, shops, offices, banks, apartments. The contemporaries in the 1880s noted that during the construction of this arcade there were certain "pretensions in terms of elegance ... the building height is impressive, it has mirror plates", but behind all this there were hidden "sacks of bast, barrels of kerosene and groceries." The building was equipped with the latest technology such as electric lighting, telegraph, and subsequently with some telephone lines, one of the first in town.
This shopping arcade is inherently the great-grandfather of modern shopping malls that are based on the same principle: the central passage with the access to individual smaller shops.
