Rozhdestvenskaya Street

Description History

The city guests coming to Nizhny Novgorod by the Volga waterway are introduced to the city in Rozhdestvenskaya Street that stretches for a 1, 5 km from the Ivanovsky road coming out of Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin to a small square in front of the Annunciation Monastery. Rozhdestvenskaya Street is considered to be an exceptional open-air heritage area. All of it is built exclusively in stone, the history of the oldest mansions dates back to the middle of the XVIII century. Officially there are 35 monuments of architecture of different times.

The history of Rozhdestvenskaya Street begins almost from the time of Nizhny Novgorod foundation in 1221, however, at that time it was not a street in the modern sense of the word, but more of a meandering trail. By the beginning of the 17th century, it was already a busy commercial area Kosmodemyanskaya street as per the church of the Saints Kozma and Damian, which has not survived to this day. After the construction in The Holy Virgin Nativity Church in stone in 1653, the street took the name of Rozhdestvenskaya (Nativity, as translated from Russian). In the 19th century it was chaotically built up mostly in wood, and then the street was later on straightened and built up with stone buildings.

Upon the transfer of Makarev Trade Fair to Nizhny Novgorod this street became a kind of Nizhny Novgorod City, the business center in downtown, with multiple offices and banks, hotels and commercial rental houses, all of them in solid stone buildings with expensive decor, a showcase of the owners` prosperity. As the land here was quite expensive the houses were built close to each other, with a “single façade” as they said at that time. Nizhny Novgorod historian Nikolai Khramtsovsky noted that in the 19th century Rozhdestvenskaya street was “the best of all the streets of Nizhny Novgorod, in terms of the buildings and the crowd."  Another interesting fact, the first urban tram line was laid in Rozhdestvenskaya street  in June 21, 1896.

Upon termination of the Trade Fair operations Rozhdestvenskaya street lost its role of the city business center but fortunately, it changed very little over time and today this street is a precious open-air architectural heritage site.
