In 1952 this square was adorned with a monument to Maxim Gorky, a project by Vera Mukhina, Honored Artist of the USSR, also author of the famous sculpture group Worker and Kolkhoz Woman. Subsequently, this square was renamed in honor of Gorky. The writer here is portrayed as a young man looking thoughtfully far into the distance, the wind tearing his coat off his shoulders. According to the original design, the monument was supposed to be set up on the high bank of the Oka, the area featuring strong winds at any time of the year.

Monument to Maxim Gorky
In early 19th century there was no such place as Gorky Square, this site was known for Pokrovsky pond, marshes and ravines. In the 1830s, the neighborhood residents were instructed to collect and bring their household garbage to this site and damp it here in order to flatten this area. The first two buildings here were a prison and an orphanage for boys. On Wednesdays this new site hosted an open-air market with not so much respect to what we now call sanitary standards. In a word, at a time when Maxim Gorky was still a young boy Alexei Peshkov who lived in his home town, this area was hard to call a nice place.
In 1950 the city set up a public garden in this square and it was selected for the monument site. Today, the garden in Gorky Square is a natural landmark with 50 rare species of trees and shrubs, including exotic plant species.
