At the corner of Bolshaya Pokrovskaya and Piskunov streets there is an architectural wonder, a so called "Cultural Revolution" communal residence building by architect Medvedev, built in the 1930s in the exotic style of Nizhny Novgorod Constructivism. Several houses are interconnected in galleries at the second and fifth floor level. Four of these buildings were meant for housing, and the fifth was a public facility, as the purposes of such communal residence to join people into a shared household to socialize, thereby offering the freedom, in particular, to the female residents, from any routine duties, by giving them the opportunity to engage in self-development and, of course, in various social activities.

The housing complex was intended for low-skilled workers, such as builders, sewers and printers. The new society demanded a new way of life with a kindergarten, a shared kitchens and a public canteen, utility and store premises, recreation and propaganda rooms for teaching illiterate workers, common showers and laundries in the basement, all of this in the spirit of the time. One-room flats were inhabited by the youth and two-three room apartments could be given families. Its flat roof used to host a proper solarium. It seemed, still a little bit further - and the petty-bourgeois way of life would forever sink into oblivion. But it never happened. At first everything went well, but the families extended, and new housing projects were commissioned. As a result, due to lack of space, the tenants started gradually mastering the common areas. Even in the shared recreation facilities had to be offered to new tenants. As a result, the building was fully re-planned and divided into individual apartments.
