Theater of Drama

Description History

The Theatre is an elegant building of festive design and classical shape, befitting a temple of art and matching Nizhny Novgorod self-indulgence and its champagne tastes in decor. The project was ordered to the chief architect of the Imperial Theaters Victor Schroeter. The Artist Magazine in 1894 recorder the architect's intention: "... this new theatre building should have beautiful out wall and be comfortable inside". The works were supervised by another architect Malinovsky, who set up special courses for skilled painters, plasterers and other finishers and started teaching them in person, the man successfully insisted on the review of the projected heating and ventilation systems, all of it in order to have the works performed on time and for this new theatre to meet the highest expectations.

The Theatre was opened in 1896, on the eve of the 16th All-Russia Art and Industry Exhibition, a grandiose event that attracted about a million participants and a lot of visitors to Nizhny Novgorod. For the color solution of the seats` upholstery the theater was colloquially named the "Blue Theatre". Formally, at the request of the City Council was named Nikolaevsky Theatre, in commemoration of Tsar Nicholas I, who had personally selected this site for the theatre building on the city plan.

The Theatre was officially inaugurated on the day of Emperor Nicholas II coronation (May 15) by Glinka's opera “Life for the Tsar”. The party of Ivan Susanin in that opera was performed by the then little-known young singer Fyodor Shalyapin. His friend, the writer Maxim Gorky attended to at this performance as a spectator. Subsequently, all the plays written by Gorky were put on and shown on this theatre stage, and in 1943 the theatre eventually received the writer`s name.
